Austin and Mabel: The Amherst Affair & Love Letters of Austin Dickinson and Mabel Loomis Todd
Published in Paperback by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Polly Longsworth, Austin Dickinson, Mabel Loomis Todd, and Richard B. Sewall
Average review score:

Steamy story behind the publication of Emily's poetry...
Emily Dickinson is often a religious poet, and more often than many think, an erotic one. She is famous for her mysteries and contradictions and elusiveness. She died and left more than l700 poems, many almost indecipherable, and a number of them "uncertainly finished." Her sister Vinnie wanted the works to see print, but could not persuade her brother Austin's wife Sue to get the job done, so she turned to Austin's mistress, Mabel, who was also married. This is the lovers' story, told through 13 years of self-justifying letters and diary entries. More importantly, it is the story of how Mabel took on the job of copying and editing the poems to please her lover, and perhaps to irritate her enemy, Sue. Emily became famous about five years after she died due to Mabel's efforts. Polly Longsworth did a fine job condensing love letters and diary entries to give us a picture of these tormented souls, whose relationships all ended badly. The actual love letters between Austin and Mabel clearly show that neither had Emily's literary talent, but both had her passion. Where Emily apparently suppressed carnality, her brother and his "other woman" reveled in it. If you are as fascinated by Emily's life as you are by her poetry, this part of the tale, while largely occurring after she died, is essential to know. A very worthwhile addition to the saga of Emily Dickinson.

Backstage Pass: A Non-Performer's Guide to Rock'N' Roll Touring Careers

How can a book change your life ...
When you are a sixteen year old Italian kid and you dream about making it in the entertainmenty industry it ain't easy. Italy is not the most rock n'roll country in the world, the music biz used to be very undeveloped in the late 80s and I didn't have a clue about how getting involved. Then one day reading Spin Magazine I read a feature about "Backstage Pass" and thought that it was the book for me, or at least could have been a chance to learn more about the entertainment industry. My granny lent me the 16 bucks to order it and after about a month there it was in my mail box in all its glossy glory. Inside there was also a note from the author, Eric Todd, asking me to write back with my opinions about it as I was his only customer from Europe, can you imagine? I started reading the book as if there was no tomorrow, lots of interviews from many famous industry people, Pete Cappadocia for pyros, Jane Rose Keith Richards' manager and many others talking about how they started and how their job works. Basically the message was: "You can make it if you try" and so I did. 10 years after I have been on the road in the US with punk rock bands, tour managed in my country for foreign bands, toured Europe with my band, started a record label, worked as a club manager, P.R. guy for clubs and bands and have tons of fond memories all because of this book. What else can I say? If you dream about making it and you don't have aclue, or if you want to have a tip from the experts that are quite likely unable to return your call or mails (even though Jane Rose has sent me signed photos by Keith Richards and many others have helped me with precious tips) this is the book for you. It changed my life!

one of the best b-ball books around
I personally thought this book was great. It was great because it told about how the NBA was so plain and simple back then but now its something else. So as you know this book was all about the NBA. So if you really like the NBA then you should buy this book. One of the best books I have ever read.

The Best Defense
Published in Paperback by Novelbooks Inc. (June, 2003)
Author: Todd A. Stone
Average review score:

A real tour de force
A real tour de force by Todd Stone-a military thriller written equally as much for women as for men. Some of the major characters in this book are women in the military, and not just as secondary characters, dropped in as window-dressing, but women with brutally important responsibilities in our military forces. The personal struggle Major Valerie Macintyre endures while surviving in this career, not to mention climbing toward and holding on to the same high rank her male counterparts can easily reach is understandable, at times infuriating, and always fascinating. We have foreign agents hiding nuclear weapons. We have an entire battalion of men in a remote area who have been genetically altered so that they cannot be stopped by normal means known to normal men. And we have military politics to contend with as this unusually diverse pot comes to a boil. This author proved himself to be a master storyteller when he wrote CLOSE TO HOME, and now this book has reinforced what a meticulous, brilliantly talented author he really is. Rugged, human and vital, THE BEST DEFENSE is another edge-of-your-seat thriller with a plot that's only too possible in today's world.

BizTalk(TM) Server: The Complete Reference
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (13 November, 2001)
Authors: David Lowe, Xin Chen, Todd Mondor, Tomislav Rus, Ned Rynearson, Steve Wright, and Tom Xu
Average review score:

Comprehensive, timely, and easy to read
Great book. Not only covers the meat of BTS 2000, but also the changes contained in BTS 2002, and, how the BizTalk Accelerators work. It's not only remarkably comprehensive (and thus really thick), but also a pretty easy read. Solid examples and good use of screen shots. Covers some of the deeper configurations that weren't fully flushed out in previous BizTalk books. An absolute must-have for a BTS Admin, or, someone who wants a deep understanding of what BTS can do.

Black & White : Board Book
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (April, 2001)
Author: Todd Parr
Average review score:

Visual Stimulation for Infants
This is a great book to share with even the tiniest readers.

The greater the contrast, the more an infant's eyes are going to be drawn to a pattern. Therefore black and white captures their attention the best.

I've been reading this book to my baby since he was just 6 weeks old, and he continues to love it at 6 months. Of course, now he mostly loves to eat it!

Blog On: Building Online Communities with Web Logs
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (14 October, 2002)
Author: Todd Stauffer
Average review score:

Blogging Fantastic
I bought two books when I got this one: The other was Rebecca Blood's "the Weblog Handbook." It's a two-star, at best, while this one is four and 3/4. I only withhold the 1/4 because some terminology wasn't clear. I had read the MacWorld reviews of all the systems Todd covered, and I knew I wanted to use only one of them, because it offered the features I need. The terminology, though, was contained in the chapters on the other systems, so I had to go into the index and look them up. (The term I'm thinking of is "bookmarklet," but there were others.) A separate chapter on terminology would have been helpful. Still, it's the best book out there on getting it up (your Blog, that is). Immediately following finishing the book, I emailed Rick Ellis, the Technical Consultant (and creator of pMachine), got immediate answers, and have signed up to start my blog on Rick's service. The website blogonbook.com is good, too, though it doesn't show correctly in Netscape 4.7. I read the book in two days. Entertaining, informative. (Bill ...)

A miracle: an excellent primer and reference on blogging
This is a truly remarkable book. It is both a detailed primer for weblog novice and serves well as a reference for the experienced blogger or one desiring to attain that level.
Stauffer's organization of his material is unusually well structured. He begins at the very beginning: what is a blog, why you might want one and so one. Then there's a walk-through of four different blogging platforms, which is surprisingly detailed, yet easy to comprehend. This section not only cleared up a lot of mysteries for me, but also introduced me to the remarkable pMachine.
He then moves on to writing, designing and tweaking your blog - with information I didn't find in the other three books I first read. Finally, he concludes with sections on publicizing yourt blog and how to use it in business environments.
Overall, a remarkable tour de fource and in my estimation, the best book on blogging currently available. As noted I've read three of them and looked at all the others. This is the only one I would unreservedly endorse -- and I am not easy to please.

Jerry
